Empowering First Nations Youth Through the Boxing Baristas Program

Fortitude Boxing’s Boxing Baristas program has once again proven how powerful sport can be in transforming lives — and this year, the initiative proudly welcomed a strong group of First Nations participants eager to build confidence, learn new skills, and take meaningful steps toward future opportunities.

The innovative program combines the discipline of boxing with the employability of barista training, offering young people a unique and empowering pathway. For many of the First Nations attendees, it became much more than just a course — it was a journey of self-discovery, cultural pride, and personal growth.

Expert Mentorship

Participants were guided by some of Australia’s most respected mentors, including NRL legend Justin Hodges and Boxing Hall of Famer Stephen Deller, both of whom brought decades of experience and deep community connection. Their presence provided invaluable guidance both inside and outside the ring, inspiring the young boxers to believe in their potential and pursue excellence.

Skill Development

Throughout the program, the focus was on both athletic and professional growth. The intensive boxing sessions helped participants strengthen their technical abilities, discipline, and resilience, while the barista training provided practical skills for employment in the hospitality industry. This balance of physical training and hands-on learning gave the young people the tools to succeed in multiple aspects of life.

Cultural Connection

Beyond sport and skill, the program recognised the importance of cultural identity. Over four special evening sessions, participants engaged in a journey of reflection, storytelling, and community connection — rediscovering their heritage and exploring what it means to be a young First Nations person in today’s world. They also had the opportunity to meet and learn from leading Indigenous athletes and community leaders, hearing honest discussions about resilience, opportunity, and belonging.

Pathway to Success

The Boxing Baristas initiative is more than a short-term program — it’s a launchpad for future champions and community leaders. By showcasing the incredible talent within Queensland’s First Nations communities, it inspires the next generation to dream big, step forward, and represent their people proudly on every stage, from the gym floor to the workforce.

As the final session wrapped up, there was an unmistakable sense of pride — in the participants, the mentors, and the wider community that supported them. The Boxing Baristas program continues to prove that when opportunity, culture, and mentorship come together, the results are extraordinary.
