ABOUT fnsa

The First Nations Sport Academy was born from a shared vision to create real opportunities for young Indigenous athletes to thrive — not only in sport, but in life. In 2023, when boxing coach Stephen Deller invited Justin Hodges to be the ambassador for his First Nations Boxing Camp, the pair quickly recognised that the program’s impact could extend far beyond the ring. What began as a week-long camp for emerging fighters grew into a broader initiative aimed at breaking down barriers, inspiring pride, and building sustainable pathways for First Nations youth across Queensland.

Together with John Hawker, a leader in rural development and community engagement, the team formalised this vision into the First Nations Sport Academy. Their mission was clear: to reduce the gap in access to high-performance facilities, coaching, and mentorship for young Indigenous athletes, particularly those from remote and regional areas. By combining Hodges’ experience as an elite athlete, Deller’s coaching expertise, and Hawker’s community focus, they established a program that champions equality, connection, and opportunity through sport.

Since its inception, the Academy has grown into a movement that empowers communities and nurtures future leaders. It continues to build on the foundation of that first boxing camp — using sport as a platform to inspire confidence, discipline, and belonging. The First Nations Sport Academy stands as a testament to what can be achieved when passion, purpose, and community come together for lasting change.
